Magical Gold Forsythia - What’s New in Shrubs in 2006! - Part 1 of 6

Winter is almost over and it’s time to think about heading outdoors to enjoy nature in its yearly re-birth! Well, if you are thinking about planting some new babies around your gardens and yards, we will feature six new shrubs available in the US market for the first time this year. Each new shrub will be featured in its own daily article. Enjoy!

Magical Gold Forsythia
Forsythia x intermedia ‘KolGold’

Forysthias

The gorgeous shrub has a bright gold color with large individual flowers the size of quarters. The plant has a great structure, with a strong, even, upright growth habit reaching four to five feet in height. Magical blooms from the base of the plant to the tip of the branches.

While Forysthias are native to eastern Asia, this stunning new variety was a chance discovery in Germany a few years ago by a grower who breeds specifically for the cut flower industry. Magical Gold looks fabulous in a cut flower arrangement, thanks to its uniformity of extra large blooms. It is frost hardy and easy to cultivate in well-drained fertile soil. Remove older shoots when blooming has finished to allow younger growth to arise from base. Full sun.

Time of Flowering: Spring

Average Landscape Size: Moderate grower to 5 ft. tall, 4 ft. wide.

Water Needs: Water regularly, when top 3 in. of soil is dry.

Sun Exposure: Full sun.

Cold Hardines: USDA Cold Zones: 5 to 9

Heat Tolerance: AHS Heat Zones: 1 to 9 [Download PDF Document of AHS Heat Map]
